Designed for personal use, this compact home in Portland's East Bayside neighborhood is intended to show that through thoughtful planning an 850 square foot home can be a comfortable and enjoyable space for a couple or small family. With a parcel only 25' wide, an existing structure only 12' wide, and a very tight budget, it was immediately apparent that an increase in height and some tricks would be required to create an efficient space that feels bigger than it is. Using the existing gable as a starting point, the street side of the building was kept it's original size, ensuring the building's scale remain appropriate to the adjacent buildings and building typology of the street. Restricted to only building on the existing footprint, the rear half of the building was torn down and built up two stories, effectively matching the slope of the hill.
